Peppa Pot: We heard the news recently of the separation between you and Scatta. Can you tell us what happened?
Idonia: Well yu done know seh a little contract disagreement. Management never waan compromise. Yuh si mi? You know seh a contract is a compromise between any two people. Ah no nuttin for me the artist fi ask you the management to sit down and compromise, feel comfortable and love the contract. Management di a try bully me fi sign dat - we nuh work with bully ting and bad up.
Peppa Pot: Are you going working independently or are you trying to align yourself to another management team?
Idonia: Well right now mi just a do what mi do best: create music and perform. Mi nah seh mi no interested in other management ... but right now mi jusa gwan do mi ting. Mi get a few calls fi bookings - we just do di ting.
Peppa Pot: What are your currently working on?
Idonia: Well you done know seh we keep the fire still a blaze the real and proper way. I m still in the studio recording the big tunes. I did a couple of videos: King Fish Ah come, Unknown Assailant and a couple of medleys (Galore, Bill Back, Mad Indian). I have some other things to line up like top performances at Sumfest and Sunsplash.
Peppa Pot: Speaking of medleys we have the Galore medley online - how did you come up with the song Chicken Head?
Idonia: The beat inspire that. We jusa vibe to it. The chicken head ting ah American ting to show that it not a one dimensional ting we come with the American ting. Then I said, "Weh I can do fi mek it different?" Leftside & Esco came up with the idea to put the real chicken sound inna it.
Peppa Pot: Tell us how the song with Bounty Killer came to be, because we know you had some conflict with an artist that he works closely with.
Idonia: Who don t know Kartel was mi link from a longer while. Everyone know seh a nuff show Kartel call me pon. Nuff time we deh a studio a hang out. Kartel ah di real man. So Kartel was the one who contributed to that link because he was the one who introduced me to Killa. From deh suh now mi, Killa, and Kartel start link. Ah so that tune deh so it come bout.
Peppa Pot: There was no controversy being as how Killa work with Busy Signal?
Idonia: Listen No controversy. Killa no too deh pon the controversial ting to a level. Him rate Busy him rate me as two of the fresh new talent coming out of Jamaica. Killa no waan no war between me and Busy neither. Him just see Idonia as an artist; so fi do a collaboration him accept. Mi thankful fi dat to the fullest cause you Killa ah di man wheh first inspire mi fi do the music. So no controversial ting - ah just the work.
Peppa Pot: Alright since you brought up your inspiration tell us about your style because it s a little different. More lyrical.
Idonia: Well my style ah di new age style. Mi draw inspiration from Killa, Shabba Ranks, Ninja Man, Baby Wayne, Baby Cham, Vybz Kartel. My style ah really mi myself but mi tek a little from each of the artists mi rate. Ah di direction the whole dancehall ah go to. Ah dat we a work pon the real and proper way.
Peppa Pot: Regarding your mixtape, I noticed you re as comfortable on the rap beats as you are on the dancehall riddims. Did your time in New York contribute to this level of comfort?
Idonia: Definitely. Im a great fan of rap music. The time in the States contributed, cause we study the rap game too - yuh si mi? We study different types of music. Ah suh mi a tell you bout the new age flow - we slice up a lot of tings and put it together and call that Idonia flow.
Peppa Pot: ListenTell us of the first time you felt the love from the audience that made you really want to pursue music.
Idonia: Ahh..... First time.....I ve been performing since 99. When I was in the States I did some parties and reh reh teh teh. People always accepted me as a lyrical deejay long time. But the real time mi start feel like a star was 2003, when I had a song playing on the radio and people started getting familiar. That took place in Spanish Town, Jamaica. Mi did get a different love; mi neva get dat love de yet. So 2003 when get dat love from the Spanish Town people mi seh, "No man mi haffi continue" So mi continue till right here now.
Peppa Pot: It s been said that your lyrics are too violent. How do you handle the critism of your lyrics?
Idonia: Yuh done know seh we talk what we see, what we fren dem ah do round we, or what we actually do. Music is life, yuh si mi? Ah just music too people fi know dat. There are different types of music for different people. We have the girl songs to make the girls dem feel good, culture songs fi di cultural people, and di badman ting. Ah just life we a represent through music the real and proper way. No one should be offended and seh Idonia ah promote this and promote dat - ah just music.
Peppa Pot: ListenI haven t seen to many flyers with your name on it in New York. When can we expect you?
