Beenie Man - Setting The Trend Pt.2

Peppa Pot: How you feel about the progression of dancehall in the States?

Beenie Man: Dancehall get bigger. Its something that dancehall did want. To be on BET and MTV and get the millions of interviews and all of these things. Its a life long dream that come through. Some people have dream and it turns into a nightmare. My dream became vision and vision became reality. Thats how it is.

Peppa Pot: In the States you have laid a lot of ground work. You have had songs with such notables as Big Pun, Mya, T.I., R. Kelly, ect. Do you feel at times your contribution to dancehall in the States gets overlooked?

Beenie Man: It not overlook. My glory dont come in one day. Mi put out an album and it sell gold the company done with it. By the two years go over it sell over a million close to two million. Then the next album do the same thing. So it s a longevity thing its not a quick thing - sales stop and then a next album. My career and my music over the years evovle and it sell more. The longer it out there the more it sells. You have new fans and new kids growing up in the business who may know King of the Dancehall, Dude, or Hum Hum now. Them want to know where Beenie Man is coming from so they go and get the old songs and then bring themselves up to date to in terms of being a fan of I and I [me].

The work that we re doing in the business - it nice. I dont care if people want to over look what i ve done. Its there in the history and it cannot change.

Peppa Pot: In December 2005 you performed at Sting [Portmore] then went to the other side of the island and peformed at Teen Splash in Oracabessa, and still came back to close the show at Sting. Where do you find the energy?

Beenie Man: The energy comes from the people. Once the people turn out to see you perform them give you that energy. The feeling that someone need to see you that means your needed you re somebody. If you leave 5,000 people over ya so [here] and you go over ya so [there] and ah 10,000 people over de so [there]. Them ah wait pon you. So its not for you to come tired, weak and lame out. It s for you to come with all the energy you can give.

So me working at Teen Splash for an hour and a half and come back to Sting is an everyday thing. Its what you have to do you know?

Peppa Pot: You ve recorded over 1,000 songs during your career. Do you ever get confused on stage?

Beenie Man: The lyrics are yours. All you have to do is hear it one time and its like a bicycle - you just gwan peddle.

Peppa Pot: You ve achieved so much - what else is there?

Peppa Pot: What s going on with Mafia House?

Beenie Man: Im currently working a new label. I have Don Mafia, D Angel. Recently we moved Tanto Metro and Devonte from Shocking Vibes and put them over on Mafia House. Its the same company because Shocking Vibes is my company, but Shocking Vibes now becomes the mother company that controls Mafia House. You understand? Beenie Man: Well is very very important. In Jamaica I have houses I deal with real estate and music. Because I have kids, six (6) kids, and my woman [D Angel] is pregnant. My kids them have to have things in this world. They have to come and see what their father has worked for and left for them. They re going to reap the legacy of my seed that i ve sown. So to have many things and to be involved in many business is great.

Right now mi need fi buy a plane. That mi need fi buy. Private Jet business. Ya. [laughs]

Peppa Pot: Lastly "Swing it Weh" is doing well on Peppa Pot. You ve been dancing since Word Dance [1995].

John Hype

Beenie Man: Well is I start it. The whole dancing trend, Black Roses Crew. World Dance and all of these things. Buju [Banton] did sing the first dancing song, Bogle. Beenie Deejays "Bogle, Bogle ah di order ah di day" But him never did work with the dancers dem. Now mi work with the dancers dem and then mi sign John Hype. Then after mi sign John Hype you have ten million man jump up seh dem a dancer. So the trend is really me responsible for it you know. So again - mi set di trend.
