Biography

Cherine Anderson has starred in two of Jamaica s most successful films; Dancehall Queen and One Love. She has written and recorded with respected producers and musicians including Sly & Robbie, Sting, Wyclef Jean, Bootsy Collins, Jimmy Cliff, and graduated with honors from the prestigious Middlebury College with a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Music and a minor in Japanese Language and Literature. Never one to pass up the opportunity to work on her craft and knowledge of the industry, Cherine spent many of her college summers interning at companies including MTV Networks, Interscope Records and the Chris Blackwell owned Palm Pictures and Palm Records.

"I ve been blessed with opportunities that I ve tried to make the best of."

Cherine was born in Rockfort in East Kingston, Jamaica. Her parents, Barbara and Deryck Anderson, recognized that she had an inquiring mind and an innate interest in entertaining. Barbara, a devout Christian, kept Cherine and her two older sisters in Sunday school and any other church activity that would keep them off the unstable streets. It was in church that Cherine s talent was discovered. Cherine explains, "It wasn t so much the message in the church songs that appealed to me at first…it was the passion and strength of people s voices." At the age of 12, Cherine became a touring member of Ashe Performing Arts Ensemble, one of the Caribbean s most successful performance companies, and received professional training in dance, music and theatre. While with Ashe, Cherine earned her role in the film Dancehall Queen, giving a striking performance as Tanya, portraying the life of an inner city teen whose sex was often her family s meal ticket. The multitalented beauty would eventually gain the attention of manager Patrick Lindsay, who introduced her to the legendary duo Sly & Robbie. Impressed with her singing, as well as her writing abilities, the duo allowed her to collaborate on many projects such as Bootsy Collins Playing With Bootsy and Elton John and Tim Rice s Aida Soundtrack. In 2003, Cherine was able to combine her two loves, singing and acting, when she gained the starring female role in the film One Love. In addition to garnering abundant positive reviews, she received the MTV2/Urbanworld Film Festival Award for Best Actress in a Feature for her heartfelt portrayal of her character, Serena. Cherine also contributed three songs to the movie s soundtrack, two of which she wrote and arranged.

"I call my music DANCEHALL SOUL: a mixture of reggae dancehall, soul, R&B and a little lover s rock. Behind the beat is a message. It incorporates the grittiness of my past

Cherine has been focusing her attention on writing music and collaborating with a team including Sly & Robbie, David Norland (Madonna, Janet Jackson, Dallas Austin), JeekyMan (Lil Kim), as well as young Jamaican producers such as Fateyes and Michael Jarret (Renaissance Crew). With radio stations in Jamaica already playing her recently released song "Good Love", which was done on the same riddim as Jimmy Riley s smash hit "Love and Devotion", Cherine looks poised to make a serious impact in the Jamaican market. The up-tempo "Cookie (Girls Gone Wild)" on the Ritz Carlton Riddim shows Anderson s diversity and ability as a songwriter to create a song that can inspire and entertain, and could be very popular among younger audiences.

"The world needs to hear more reggae and dancehall from a female s perspective. I love everything from Beenie Man to Shaggy to Jimmy Cliff…but I know it would be cool to have a female tell her story... with the right vocal attitude and killer lyrics. I want to be a part of the female movement out of Jamaica that makes that kind of impression."

With all the attention on reggae, reggaeton and dancehall on the international market, Cherine has all the right ingredients: vocal and acting talent, beauty, intelligence and understanding of the entertainment industry, to be more than just a successful artist – but a Caribbean brand.
